Things You'll Need
New batteries
Replacement wire
A beeping electric dog fence or a dog running through a fence line without a care are clear signs that the dog fence needs resetting. The dozens of wireless, in-ground and above-ground systems available to dog owners all have similar basic features and functionality. No matter your fence type or brand, you can quickly troubleshoot the system to discover any obvious problems and reset the system so that it functions properly.
Turn off or unplug the main fence unit. This allows you to troubleshoot the fence without getting you or your dog shocked.
Remove your dog’s receiving collar for radio signal fence systems and turn it off.
Replace any batteries in the collar or main fence component.
Check the entire length of wire on above-ground electronic wire fences. The wire should be straight and unbroken. If the wire crosses at any point, causing two wires to touch, the fence will short out. Untangle any crossed wires. Replace any sections of broken wire as needed.
Move any large metal objects out of the boundary of a wireless fence system. Metal objects interfere with the signal.
Plug in and turn the fence back on to test the system. Put your dog’s collar on for wireless systems only after testing that the system is now working properly.
