How to Make a Salve Out of Tea Tree Oil

| Updated September 26, 2017

Things You'll Need

  • Vaseline

  • 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil (you can find this anywhere that sells lotions and extracts)

  • Peppermint oil

  • Small pan

  • Stove

Tea tree oil is an excretion that is produced by Melaleuca trees, which are grown in Australia. Tree tree oil is used for many different types of things including anti fungal cream, antiseptic, moisturizer and it can even be used to help stimulate the immune system. Some people have even noticed that tea tree oil can even be used as an insect repellent and for treating thrush. Because tea tree oil is mild and few animals are allergic to it, tea tree oil can be used as a salve to help treat cuts, scrapes, scratches and bites that your horse might acquire during its day to day activities. Several tack stores and horse supply catalogs offer customers salves and lotions that are made out of tea tree oil, but you can save money by making a tea tree oil salve in your own kitchen.

Melt 4 ounces of Vaseline. You can do this in a pot on your stove, or in your microwave.

Mix in the tea tree oil.

Add a few drops of peppermint oil. The peppermint oil will help cool the injured area, and it also suppose to help alleviate pain.

Stir the ingredients together.

Allow the mixture to harden. If the salve is runny and won't harden, you will have to add another ounce of Vaseline.

Smear a light amount of the salve onto the injury three times daily, until the injury has healed.

Store the unused salve in your refrigerator. The tea tree salve can be stored in your refrigerator for several months. Make sure you keep the unused portions of your salve in a container that has a lid, to prevent debris from contaminating the salve.

Warnings

  • Do not use this salve around your horse's eyes.
