How to Sell Your Dog

When you can no longer care for your dog, your choice may be find it a new home. Giving up your dog for sale may be a painful process, so take steps to find a new owner who will take good care of your pet. Start by asking family members and friends whether they are interested in adopting your dog before you launch a wider search for a new home.

Post an ad in your local newspaper. Describe your dog's appearance, breed, sex health and age. Include information on how to contact you.

Post an ad on online websites, such as Craigslist or your local ASPCA. Include a picture and vital statistics, such as age, sex and breed. Many potential buyers will want to know your reason for selling your dog and whether the pet is spayed or neutered.

Put up fliers in your neighborhood advertising that your dog is for sale.

Because you want a safe home for your dog, screen potential buyers by asking them pertinent questions. Determine whether they live in a home that allows dogs and provides exercise opportunities. Ask whether they have owned a dog, what other pets they own and whether they have small children. Answer their questions about your dog's health status and why you are letting it go truthfully.

When you give your dog to the new owner, bring all of the dog's veterinary records, its toys and bedding, and documents showing that you transferred ownership.
