Tips
Your local veterinarian can give you more detailed information on your breed's specifications.
Artificial insemination in dogs is quite common for dog breeders who are trying to contribute other attributes to their breeds. A male is chosen for his personality, intelligence and ability to create useful offspring, and is mated with females that are able to breed in normal cases. Artificial insemination involves collecting the semen of a male dog or stud, and then contributing this to the female dog's reproductive system. This can be done at home or by a veterinarian.
Bring the male and female dog into a room together. Keep the artificial vagina close to the two dogs and allow the male to try to mount the female. When he begins to mount, the artificial vagina must be placed over the male penis to catch the seminal fluids.
Stimulating the penis by squeezing gently and creating a pulsing effect with the palm around the artificial vagina will cause the male dog to ejaculate.
Remove the male dog from the area, so he does not try to mount the female dog.
Using the medical syringe without a needle, insert the end of the syringe into the artificial vagina to remove the seminal fluids. This is done by making sure the plunger is all the way down before inserting the syringe into the artificial vagina. Slowly pull the plunger outwards while inside the artificial vagina, and this will collect the seminal fluids into the barrel of the syringe.
Insert the 1.4 inch tube into the female dog's vagina. Breed and size of the dog will determine how much of the tube should be inserted. For dogs weighing less than 5 pounds, it is best for a veterinarian to perform the procedure. For small breeds such as Pomeranians and Chihuahuas, insert the tube only 2 inches. For larger breeds such as Great Danes and German Shepherds, it is recommended that the tube be inserted only 5 inches.
Insert the syringe into the other end of the tube that is inserted into the female dog's vagina. Slowly push the plunger until all of the seminal fluids are deposited into the tube, and hold the tube upright to make sure the fluids are delivered and do not run out.
