Denosyl Side Effects

So often, a parent of a dog with liver disease sees or hears "this medication is not appropriate for a dog with liver disease." That's not the case with Denosyl, a supplement that's actually geared toward helping a dog with liver disease. Rarely, a dog will vomit from this supplement, considered to be its only side effect.

S-Adenosylmethionine, commonly referred to as SAMe, is the generic version of the supplement Denosyl. Produced in one of the body's amino acids, it promotes healthy liver function by enhancing the function of liver cell membranes. Available in tablet form, Denosyl should be given to a dog on an empty stomach to maximize its absorption, and it should be given whole, not split or crushed.

The only reported side effect of Denosyl is occasional vomiting after the medicine is ingested. Though the effects have not been reported with Denosyl, Veterinary Partner notes that SAMe combined with some medications can create serotonin syndrome, a potentially dangerous condition of excessive levels of serotonin in the brain. The Food and Drug Administration considers S-Adenosylmethionine to be a supplement, not a medication, so it's not subject to testing for use; formulation amounts and quality can vary according to manufacturer.
