As a parrot owner, you must keep your birds warm enough during winter months. Parrots are tropical birds not naturally adapted to surviving in cold temperatures. If you keep your parrot cages outdoors then you will need to make significant modifications to make sure your birds are safe and comfortable during winter months. According to avian veterinarian Gregory Burkett, DVM, parrots should be kept in temperatures between 40 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and are most comfortable between 65 and 80 degrees.
Step 1
Assess the location of your bird's cage: it should be placed where your parrot is protected from the elements, especially wind, rain and snow. Place your parrot's cage in a structure that will provide him with adequate protection, such as a shed or garage. The area should be able to contain the heat and humidity your parrot needs in his environment.
Step 2
Attach a thermometer to the outside of your parrot's cage so that you will always know the exact temperature of your bird's living environment. Check the thermometer regularly during cool weather.
Step 3
Install specially designed birdcage heaters. Follow all directions on the specific heater's packaging to ensure proper and safe installation.
Step 4
Add a humidifier to your parrot's environment to ensure the area does not become too dry for his comfort. Parrots thrive in humid environments and it is essential that your bird's winterized cage stays humid. Place the humidifier near the cage but not in a location where the parrot can actually touch or interact with it.
