How to Drain Your Pug's Anal Sac

Pugs are clean dogs, but they occasionally develop a strong, unpleasant odor that originates from their rectal area. This is a sign that the pug needs his anal glands expressed. Anal glands are small organs located near the pug’s rectum, and they contain a pungent fluid that typically gets removed from the pug’s body through defecation. When the fluid is blocked, this condition is called "anal gland impaction," a common issue for pugs.

Put on a pair of rubber gloves.

Put the pug on a table with his rear end facing you.

Lift the pug’s tail so you have clear access to his rectum.

Locate the anal glands. You cannot see the anal glands, but they are located directly next to the dog’s rectum. If the dog’s rectum is a clock face, the anal glands are situated at four o’clock and eight o’clock

Press your fingers against the location of the anal glands, gently push upward toward the rectum. When done properly, a grayish-brown or black fluid oozes from the dog’s rectum.

Wipe away fluid with a wet paper towel. Be sure to clean any fluid clings to the dog’s fur or rectum.
