No matter how you add it up, keeping horses is expensive. A homemade conditioning spray can help cut down on the cost, without cutting corners. It's also environmentally friendly and can be better for your horse's coat than some commercial products. A good homemade conditioning spray is also handy when there's no time for a whole bath.
Baby or Mineral Oil
Mix baby or mineral oil with a few drops of essential oil, like rosemary, chamomile or eucalyptus oil in a spray bottle. Spray a fine mist directly on the horse, or spray on the brush right before grooming for even distribution. You can also mix baby or mineral oil with equal parts apple cider vinegar and eight parts water to make a spray-on conditioner. The oil softens the hair and loosens tangles. It gives body hair a nice sheen and makes the mane and tail easier to brush.
Avocado and Rice Bran Oil
Equal parts avocado and rice bran oil make a spray similar to silicone, but without the high price tag or chemicals. Shake the mixture well before each use. Add a few drops of essential oil for a pleasing scent. Avocado and rice bran oil are absorbed into the hair, adding moisture and giving it a soft, smooth feel. It also helps protect against damage from rubbing and brushing.
Bath Oil Beads
Dissolve 1 cup bath oil beads in 3 cups water. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and shake well. The oil will help condition and detangle, but apply it lightly to avoid attracting too much dirt. Bath oil helps moisturize both the skin and the hair, giving it an attractive sheen. It can also help detangle knotted manes and tails.
Conditioner and Vinegar
Mix one part regular conditioner, made either for humans or horses, with one part apple cider vinegar. Spray all over the coat and brush thoroughly to remove burrs and give a healthy shine. Vinegar removes dirt and flakes while also closing the hair cuticles to help the hair lie flat and feel soft and smooth. The conditioner adds moisture, making the hair even softer than the vinegar alone.
