Is Cardboard Bad for Guinea Pigs?

A guinea pig's teeth grow continually throughout his life, so chewing is essential to keep them worn down and prevent dental problems. Guinea pigs' digestive systems allow them to chew wood and wood-based products such as paper and cardboard without any ill effects. Before placing cardboard in your cavy's cage, make sure it won't become a hazard to his health.

Stuff It

Ensure that any box or other cardboard container destined for your guinea pig's cage has not been used to store anything which could be toxic to your pig. Make sure to slice cardboard tubes down the middle to prevent a curious guinea pig from getting his head stuck. Stuff tissue boxes or tubes full of hay, parsley or cilantro for an interesting way to serve up your cavy's greens.
