Otomax is a type of topical ointment only available with a veterinarian's prescription. It's used to treat ear infections in both dogs and cats. While it is only approved for use in dogs by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, your vet may prescribe it to use in your cat's ears "off label."
Otomax: What Is It?
Otomax is a medicated ointment produced by Schering-Plough Animal Health Corp. It contains gentamicin, a type of antibiotic, betamethasone, a corticosteroid and clotrimazole, an antifungal ingredient. These three ingredients work together to treat ear infections caused by bacteria or yeast. The corticosteroid also provides some relief from any itching and swelling that the infection has caused. While it's primarily for use in dogs, it also can be used safely in cats, according to petMD. Your vet will determine if it is appropriate to treat your cat's ear infection and what the correct dosage should be.
Applying the Medication
Apply Otomax topically to the skin of your kitty's ears as directed by your vet. Gently massage her ears to make sure that the medication is properly distributed. Your vet will instruct you how long to continue treatment, which usually lasts about a week. While it's an ointment, it does have a liquid consistency for easy application to the ears. This medication does have some side effects, including diarrhea, hearing loss and changes in food or water intake. If you notice any side effects, notify your vet right away.
