How to Build a Dove Box Feeder

Setting up a backyard attraction for doves is as simple as putting proper feeders in optimal locations. Doves prefer open box feeders or platform feeders, which are available at most retailers, but if you prefer to do it yourself, a few pieces of scrap wood, your toolbox and a couple of hours can have the neighborhood doves snacking out of your homemade box feeder in no time.

Step 1

For a square feeder, cut four pieces of wood measuring 2 by 12 inches. Sand wood pieces well, removing all splinters and rough edges.

Step 2

Nail the pieces together, using at least two nails on each corner. This will create a shallow, bottomless box, 12 inches long and 2 inches high.

Step 3

Cut a piece of screen 13 by 13 inches. This will allow the screen to overlap the length and width of the feeder square.

Step 4

Staple the screen to the feeder square, forming a bottom. Trim any excess with the wire cutters, and use the metal file to remove any rough edges.

Step 5

Determine how far from the tree branch you want the feeder to hang, and cut the nylon rope accordingly. Two pieces 6 feet long is typically suitable.

Step 6

Staple one end of the first piece of rope into the corner, and staple the other end diagonally into the other corner. Repeat for the remaining two corners.

Step 7

Gather the rope at its center, and tie it off, forming a loop. This will be used to tie the feeder to the tree limb.
