Garden lime, or agricultural lime, is a beneficial substance in chicken coops. Lime reduces the smell and moisture level in the coop. However, lime is not a substitute for regularly cleaning the manure and bedding in the coop. You should also always cover the lime with bedding, as it is an irritant when it comes in direct contact with the chickens. Lime is made from crushed limestone or chalk. If you are unsure which product to use, ask your veterinarian or feed store clerk for a recommendation.
Clean the chicken coop before putting lime in it.
Lock the chickens out of the chicken coop while you are applying the lime to keep them from getting any directly on them.
Sprinkle a thin layer of lime on the floor of the coop by hand or with a small scoop. Wear gloves when you handle the lime.
Cover the floor with your regular bedding material.
Let the chickens back into the coop.
Sprinkle lime about once a week onto areas where manure builds up, such as under the roost. Immediately cover the lime with more bedding.
