How to Find Your PH Balance

| Updated September 26, 2017

Things You'll Need

  • Saliva or urine pH test strip kits

  • Spoon for saliva test

Finding your pH balance is simple, since it utilizes two easily accessible types of human body fluids: urine and saliva. Both types of tests are very accurate at determining a body's pH level. PH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of your body. Healthy people have a pH between 7.1 and 7.5, which is the ideal balance. If the body becomes too acidic, diseases can flourish. If you know your body's pH, you can work toward bringing it to 7 by changing your diet to one that emphasizes natural foods and living a healthier lifestyle.

Urine pH Test Strip

Buy urine pH test strips from an online retailer or at a drugstore. These are small strips of paper that will turn color when wet and reveal the pH level of that substance. One end has a colored box and the rest of the strip is white.

Urinate on a test strip in the morning before you eat or drink anything. Dip the colored end of the strip in the stream of urine for three seconds.

Wait for the test strip to change colors. It should finish changing colors after 60 seconds.

Compare the test strip to the chart on the pH test strip box. Match the color to one on the box to find the pH level.

Saliva pH Test Strip

Buy saliva pH test strips from an online retailer or at a drugstore. They look similar to the urine test strips of paper but are only for saliva use.

Refrain from eating or drinking anything for at least half an hour prior to using the pH strips to keep the saliva clean. Create a wad of saliva in your mouth and swallow it (or spit it out). Repeat this procedure three times to clean the saliva of any food particles.

Spit carefully into a spoon and dip one end of a pH strip into the saliva for three seconds.

Remove the strip and watch it change colors. Compare the color to the chart on the pH test strip box to find your body's pH. Healthy saliva will have a pH of about 7.4.

  • Use the pH test strips weekly to see if you have changed your pH level through diet.

Healthy children have a pH of 7.5.

Eat foods that have no additives or preservatives to restore a healthy pH balance.

  • People with cancer can have a pH level around 4.5.
