Colitis, an inflammation of the colon, is a serious health condition that causes watery diarrhea and can lead to dehydration and, in severe cases, death. Because a dog's colon is sensitive to food, it is important to restrict your dog's diet to reduce the unpleasant symptoms commonly associated with colitis, which includes diarrhea, blood in the stool and frequent bowel movements. While colitis is not always preventable, it can be controlled with proper medicine and temporary diet modification.
Boil between 1/4 lb. and 1/2 lb. pound of chicken, turkey, or beef in a pot and, when thoroughly cooked, cut it up into small pieces.
Boil 3/4 cup of brown rice in a pot, and rinse to cool it off.
Cut up three white potatoes, three sweet potatoes, one leek, and one turnip into small pieces, and boil them in another pot . Stir the vegetables frequently, and when they are soft, promptly remove them from the pot.
Mix the meat, rice and vegetables in the dog's bowl, and give the dog only half of his normal meal size. Known as the bland diet, with this meal you can reintroduce food to your dog without upsetting his stomach. It contains carbohydrates and nutrients to maintain your dog's health without causing irritation.
Mix the bland food with her regular food for each meal to slowly transition back to her regular diet.
